This is pattern No.179, ‘Alcoves’ from the design book ‘A Pattern Language’. It recommends that people should be given a chance to find a little privacy in a communal space like a family living room. The alcove is a small space on the edge of a room which is large enough for a few people to sit and chat but open to the room so that everyone is still together.
